Has anyone ever made a roof rack or found a manufacturer for AE86 applications?

I'd like to get a hardcore roof rack to carry a ton of tires to drift events and such, but I want it to be pretty easy to remove and not leave visible bolt holes.

Is this possible?

I'm more concerned about mounting point ideas than what products are out there for sale, as I'd have to modify a rack or make one of my own.

Thanks!

Common VW idea...

I like this style, that's what I'm going for.

Most car applications roof racks are universal models that can be bought about anywhere.
Have you thought about getting a small trailer utility?

you can find a really cheap deal in alot of places. even in the junkyard.
They range for a used on for 125-200 range for a light load.
search at Craiglist or what-not. Brand new are around 500 dollar range.

simple as this

Hrms... that's a great idea! What are the laws on what trailers need to be tagged or not? I'm terrified of messing with the electricals to make brake lights...

I am hoping to find/make something that can carry 10 tires lol.

Also... How did you guys make trailer hitches hook up on the AE86?

From what I know. some cars on the frame has a location for light loads. I know, VERY SURE,
The AE86 has trailer hitches locations on them. I know I seen the picture before.

Remember. If your going to bring tires/ rims. You can put them in the car, on the Trailer, and
even the roof rack. LOL That will fit 10 plus tires/rims. Its gonna make your car look like it
stool them.

To make it simple. You can go to any Trailer companies that install, wire simple harness, and all that jazz for you.
As for the Trailer hitch, you can buy those at Walmart. The casing that is welded to your
AE86 Frame can be done at the Trailer company. I'm not sure they have the
hitch casing at walmart. Just check your local business page or google map it for local business.

I'm pretty sure I know the works of Trailers in VA since my step-father has one for his Jeep Wrangler.
All you need to do is go to the DMV for the paper work. All you get is very small payment of
the sticker and small plates. Then your done. But You just go to VA DMV website for more details.

When I think of AE86 roof rack. Here are the things I think is not much of a good idea.

When people install them, There is a good chance they have to drill into your roof.
That can cause water into your car, rust will form, and could wear out your top frame
as moisture travels. Hopefully not goes towards your A,B,C pillar bar area to weaken it. those frames are hallow.

When putting tires there. You will also experience Top heavy. Even if you take the tires off.
you prob have to take off your roof rack as well since most motorsports have strict regulations of
foreign objects on cars. While driving or in a crash, That roof rack could fly anywhere and hurt someone else.

just want to add that.

Yeah, that's a start, lol!

How about a trailer hitch and frame carry behind the bumper? Where's a good point to hook a trailer hitch without bending the bumper or any other part of the car?

Pretty neat, but it would be top heavy and kinda just not safe due to blocking rear view.
If the tires are not secure enough, brake and see those fling everywhere. have to be pretty careful about it.
